Pneumonia, want to avoid it this winter?

by Aug 29, 2021

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs caused by either a viral or bacterial disease. The lungs become inflamed as your alveoli (tiny air sacs) become filled with fluid, causing an infection to arise.

During winter Pneumonia commonly transpires as a result of the flu or common cold, and can range from a mild case to a potentially life-threatening illness. Because of its severity, stay healthy this winter and know what signs to stay conscious of.

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Coughing and wheezing
  • Chest Pains
  • Fever and chills
  • Coughing up green or yellow mucus
  • Fatigue
  • Confusion in older adults

Such symptoms range in their level of severity. Nevertheless, if you or a family member experience any of these symptoms contact a medical health practitioner immediately. In some cases, a doctor may require you to receive a Chest X-ray, CT Scan or blood tests for further diagnostics.

Treatment for pneumonia will vary based on a person’s age and the type of infection acquired

  • Antibiotics may be prescribed by a general health practitioner in order to help combat pain, fever and coughing
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Get lots of rest
  • Hospitalisation may be required in high risk cases and or when affecting high risk groups, such as infants, young children or the elderly
  • Do not smoke
  • Stay hygienic by washing your hands, disinfecting dirty surfaces and covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing
